INSTITUTE OF Urban Living dba. Hyacinth’s Place
Mission
The mission of the Institute of Urban Living dba. Hyacinth’s Place is to provide permanent affordable housing with support services to the homeless mentally ill. We work to break the cycle of homelessness by challenging individuals to move above and beyond their environment and personal circumstance to maximize quality of life and work towards life-long self-sufficiency.  
Position
The Board is made up of nine (9) Board members with backgrounds in leadership, finance/banking, law and psychology/mental health.  There is currently one vacancy. We are seeking a candidate who is politically conscious/active with resources and/ability to network within the Washington DC political culture. The ideal candidate would be willing to work towards enforcing a social contract between the people and the government.  
Responsibilities:
  • Leadership, governance and oversight of the non-profit organization
  • Serves as a trusted advisor to the CEO
  • Develops and implements IUL’s strategic plan
  • Fiduciary responsibility to the organization
  • Approve organization’s annual budget, audit reports, and other business decisions; 
  • Assist the CEO and Board Chair in identifying and recruiting other Board Members
  • Serving on committees and taking on special assignments
  • Representing IUL to stakeholders and acting as an ambassador for the organization
  • Ensuring IUL’s commitment to a diverse board and staff  reflective of the community in which it serves
 
Fundraising Obligation
IUL Board Members will consider the organization a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts of at least minimum of $1,000, so the organization can credibly solicit contributions from foundations and other donors. This contribution can be personal or from other sources made on the Board member’s behalf.  It is expected that Board Members make this annual contribution commensurate with their financial capability.
